Für eine reiche Residenz voll hoher Häuser und Paläste, voll Leben und Verkehr, mag solche raumverschwendende Anlage die empfehlenswerteste sein, für eine kleine Provinzialstadt aber ist sie bedenklich. Sie gleicht einem auf Auswuchs gemachten großen Staatsrock, in den sich der Betreffende, weil er von Natur klein ist, nie hineinwachsen kann. Dadurch entsteht eine Öde und Leere, die zuletzt den Eindruck der Langenweile macht.



Die Billigkeit erheischt hinzuzufügen, daß wir es unglücklich trafen: das Gymnasium hatte Ferien und die Garnison Mobilmachung. So fehlten denn die roten Kragen und Aufschläge, die, wie die zinnoberfarbenen Jacken auf den Bildern eines berühmten Niederländers (Cuyp) in unserm farblosen Norden dazu berufen scheinen, der monotonen Landschaft Leben und Frische zu geben. Alles war still und leer, auf dem Schulplatze wurden Betten gesonnt, und es sah aus, als sollte die ganze Stadt aufgefordert werden, sich schlafen zu legen. (...)
